Allium is the botanical name for ornamental onions. Allium means 'sharp', which is very appropriate because of the flavour onions give to dishes. The allium is a special appearance in the garden and insects, butterflies and bees love the many flowers of the allium.
The allium sativum is mostly known by 'garlic', which is a culinary herb grown worldwide. The garlic belongs to the 'alliaceae' (the garlic family), along with chives, leek and onion. Garlic has been used as seasoning, medicine or food for centuries and it has a very typical taste.
