A familiar sight across Japan, these secateurs are the everyday favourite for general pruning. They feature a sturdy lower catch with a satisfying, reliable action that’s easy to operate even with cold, wet hands or when wearing muddy gloves. The bright yellow handles are easy to spot outdoors — even if they accidentally get tossed into the compost. For the left-handed model, we’ve added a single blue sleeve to help distinguish it from a right-handed partner’s pair.

The Mainichi Small measures 180 mm with a 45 mm blade, about 10% more compact than the standard model, and may suit those who wear a size Small Niwaki Gardening Glove. The standard Mainichi handles cuts of roughly 10–15 mm (plant type and morning breakfast permitting), while the smaller version is happiest around 8–10 mm. And as always: if a cut feels like hard work, it’s probably too much — trust your judgement.
