Freesia Double White is a highly fragrant, tender perennial bulb, often supplied by specialist growers such as Kapiteyn. It is prized for its lush, double white flowers carried on elegant, arching stems. Ideal for summer displays, Freesias perform beautifully in borders, containers, and as cut flowers, filling the garden with a sweet, uplifting scent.
Key Characteristics & Care
Appearance: Pure white, double-layered, trumpet-shaped flowers borne on tall, slender stems
Height: 30–50 cm (12–24 inches)
Fragrance: Strong, sweet, and intensely fragrant
Planting Time: Spring (March–May), once the risk of frost has passed
Position: Full sun to light, sheltered shade
Soil: Fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil
Planting Depth & Spacing: Plant corms 5–8 cm deep and 7–10 cm apart
Winter Care: Not frost-hardy (USDA Zones 9–10). In colder areas, lift corms in autumn and store in a dry, frost-free place at 8–15°C.
Usage & Growing Tips
Cut Flowers: Excellent for bouquets; cut stems as flowers begin to open
Flowering Period: Late June to August
Care Tips: Water regularly during growth, avoiding waterlogged soil. For a longer flowering season, plant successive batches of corms every two weeks in spring.
