Corylus avellana, the native Irish hazel, is a fast-growing, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree. Yellow catkins brighten late winter, followed by soft rounded leaves and hazelnuts in autumn that are loved by birds and wildlife. Ideal for native hedging, woodland planting and wildlife gardens.

Planting your tree
Choose a spot with plenty of room to grow. Soak the roots in water for 30 minutes before planting. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots naturally, ensuring the point where the main roots meet the trunk sits at ground level.
Fill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly. Add mulch around the base, keeping it clear of the trunk, and water during dry spells for the first two growing seasons.
Bare-root trees should be planted while dormant, generally between November and March. Plant as soon as possible, keeping the roots moist until planting. Avoid planting in frozen or waterlogged ground.
